John
3:22-30
“He must increase, but I must
decrease.”
(John
3:30)
Tempted by his own disciples to think more highly of
himself and his calling, John strongly refutes their arguments with a statement
that cannot be misunderstood…”He must
increase, but I must decrease.” His
mission was to pave the way for the Savior, nothing more. He knew it, embraced it, and was trying to
fulfill it.
We are often tempted by others, even those closest to
us, to be distracted from what we know to be right. Even Jesus’s closest friends tempted him to
turn away from the path he had to walk.
John and Jesus were resolute in faithfully following what God had called
them to be and to do.
All around us in this Advent season, there is the
temptation to be distracted from the real joy of the season, to listen to the
voices around us and focus on things other than the gift of Bethlehem. John’s words have meaning in helping us focus
once more on the true meaning of Christmas; He must increase and I must
decrease.
Prayer: Lord
Jesus, you must increase and I must decrease.
Amen.
